WHY KATE? Musings by Imzadi

Lindsey needs love; I think we’re all agreed on that. He may want sex (don’t most men?), but deep down inside love is what he needs most. The problem is to find love with that special person who is, hopefully, his soulmate, with whom he’ll live happily ever after. Who is she? My use of the word “she” is deliberate, as I have never subscribed to the “Lindsey is gay” or “Lindsey is sexually ambiguous” schools of thought. I see no subtext or unresolved sexual tension between Lindsey and Angel. And I believe that one of his hopes and dreams is to one day have a child of his own, something that wouldn’t happen with a male lover. Hence, I’m looking for the woman of his dreams.

My first choice would be a devoted fanfiction writer named Imzadi. After all, who has given him more of her thoughts? More of her time? And who has put more words in his mouth than almost anyone else (Joss included). Unfortunately, however, Imzadi’s husband might object. And, of course, Lindsey lives in the Jossverse while Imzadi lives in Olney, MD, which isn’t even remotely the hellmouth or even the heckmouth! Vampires can’t be found here, as they’d be bored out of their minds. And all the demons have moved about 20 miles south to Washington, DC. (Imzadi sighs and wipes away a stray tear!)

We will, therefore, focus our attention on the women of the Angelverse and, with two exceptions, women he has met on camera. First of all, let’s look at Drusilla. That would never work because she’s an insane vampire. And anyone who would go off with a slime demon rather than Spike doesn’t have the taste to appreciate our Lindsey. And I think she’s drive him over the edge if she didn’t drink him first. So, say “no” to Drusilla!

Lilah is, in my humble opinion, no better choice than Dru. Yes, she is beautiful in a fashion model way—love those cheekbones! But she is EVIL! Yes, she has shown a softer side in her relationship with Wes, but let’s not forget how she’s damned herself out of her own mouth with Lindsey. He cares about kids enough to risk his life to save three he doesn’t even know. She, on the other hand, has wished in his presence that she had listened to her mother and had kids so she could offer one up before the 75 year review. Out of his hearing, she expressed the opinion that the infant Connor should be captured alive so he could be dissected. Let’s face it, she is not meant to be the mother of Lindsey’s children. And she betrayed him more than once, as in the case of the microphone in the blouse in the episode Redefinition. So, bye bye Lilah!

Although he never met Gwen Raiden in the show, he might very well have met her at Wolfram & Hart on occasion. She’s a free-lance master thief, and the evil law firm might have made use of her talents on one or more occasions. Possibly Special Projects had hired her, which could make Lindsey her contact. She’s beautiful, intelligent, rich—what more could he want? But life with her could be electrifying! One wonders what their kids would be—X-Tots? If she could settle down and have kids, that is, which seems unlikely as she loves the excitement of her career. She is also untrustworthy. Unless we see them together and see a developing chemistry, I think Gwen can be dismissed as a viable candidate for Lindsey’s heart.

Lindsey & Fred never met on the show, as the gang went to Pylea and brought her back after Lindsey set out for parts unknown. However, if he returned to L.A. and made contact with Angel Investigations, he would definitely meet our favorite physicist. Assuming that she is not his long-separated sister, as I and possibly a few others believe, Winifred Burkle could be a good match for Lindsey. She is arguably the most intelligent female on the show, and, depending on how many years of graduate school she had before her five year “sabbatical” in Pylea, could be the most educated or at least tied with Lilah for that designation. She, too, is from the southwest and may have some similar interests shared with an Oklahoma boy, such as country music. Like Lindsey, she is probably a little older than she looks and may be ready to settle down. One interest I have attributed to Lindsey based on the fact that it is Christian Kane’s favorite hobby is cooking, and, as we all know, Fred loves to eat. I can picture lazy Sunday mornings with Fred happily scarfing down waffles as fast as Lindsey can get them out of the waffle iron (no frozen toaster waffles for these two) and then racing to see who can complete the New York Times Crossword Puzzle first. Yes, I think that non-sibling Fred could be a good match for Lindsey. I’d make her number two on the top ten list.

Faith has been paired with Lindsey in a number of fanfics lately. I can’t see it myself. They do have several things in common, however. Both of them are absolutely gorgeous; Faith may be the most beautiful woman in the Angelverse. They have both grown up in poverty and have felt the dark side of the force in their lives. Lindsey’s father figure was evil Holland Manners; Faith’s was evil Mayor Richard Wilkins. There is a similarity of background that would allow them to understand and sympathize with each other. If Faith, like Lindsey, has reformed, they could help each other to grow and change. However, Faith is uneducated, ignorant, crude, vicious, violent, deceitful, and often rude. Lindsey may dress like a cowboy when he’s not in Armani, but Faith dresses like a hooker. I think he’s grown too polished and cultured to put up with that for long. I do not see Faith as a viable candidate for Lindsey’s love.

Anne Steele, on the other hand, has possibilities. She has known Lindsey for a long time and, until the events of Blood Money, seemed to have a positive, friendly relationship with him. She too had her hard times and, like Lindsey, made her own way in the world, going from runaway to a position of authority and responsibility. As we saw at the Celebrity Holdup, she is able to fit in at just about any level of society. I think she could be a wife of whom Lindsey could be very proud. She is also a very caring person, as can be witnessed by her choice of career: operating a shelter for runaways and street kids. If only they hadn’t betrayed each other, Lindsey by planning to take most of the proceeds of the ball for his firm and Anne by showing the videotape, thinking it would expose his plot, they might have been the number one match. However, because of everything else they have going for each other, I’ll make it number three.

Ah, the lovely Cordelia. Witness the look of awe on her face as she watches him on stage at Caritas. Yes, she is struck by Lindsey’s looks and talent. And of course he must also appreciate her beauty. But she is perhaps seven years his junior and hardly ready to settle down. And, of course, she is in love with Angel. But even if she were to come to love him, could he overcome the guilt he must feel when he remembers that he was willing to let her go to Russell Winters and to cover up her death if necessary? Could he overcome the guilt he would have to feel over his attempt to burn the scroll that would have saved her from the mind-wrenching visions Vocah sent to her? I think the answer to that is NO. He does, after all, have a conscience. This relationship would be doomed from the start.

I’m sure you’re wondering when we get to Darla. Now is the time. Yes, Lindsey loved Darla or at least thought he did. He tenderly cared for her after the raising, after she began to feel herself dying, and after Angel set her afire. How did she pay him back for giving her his heart on a silver platter? She bit him. She teased and tormented him. She accused him of being in love with Angel. She threw him across Holland’s office into a wall. She told him she was using him and didn’t really care who survived—Lindsey or Lilah. She betrayed him at the 75 year review. She slept with Angel but not with him. And she ran off with everything she could take with her. Even Lindsey with the death wish and masochistic streak he appeared to have developed in the second season can only take so much! Did he really love her? Angel thought he wasn’t capable of it; “Maybe not, but I don’t want to see her die, and neither do you.” I feel that what he felt was more a tenderness and affection that seemed to match her vulnerability. When she was at the low points, he was especially affectionate. However, the dynamics of their relationship seemed slightly different in Dear Boy when she was stronger; then he appeared more a partner in crime and in sex (or so he wished) rather than a true lover. But when she was sad or weak, or appeared to him to be as in Reprise, he wore his heart on his sleeve. No, vampire or no, Darla is not the one for him. She’d never choose him in the first place, and he would soon give up in despair.

Finally we come to the one woman in the Angelverse that I feel is right for Lindsey. Kate Lockley is roughly his age. I believe that both of them are Catholic, although they’ve strayed from the Church. Both of them had less than ideal relationships with their fathers. Kate’s mother died when she was young; Lindsey’s may have as far as we know. They’ve seen the dark side of things more than they’ve wanted to. Both of them have been in love with vampires who have bitten them. They’ve both had a death wish, which Lindsey showed in Reunion as he waited for Darla to kill him and Kate showed in Reprise as she attempted suicide with alcohol and sleeping pills. And now they are both at loose ends, out of their respective jobs with nowhere to go. So why not make a fresh start together, helping each other to find their place in the universe? I realize that back in Sanctuary she told him she despised him and the things he represented, but he walked away from all of that by his own choice. That must count for something. And how could she resist that adorable eyebrow raise as he walks away from her in Sanctuary? They would also have a good idea of what not to do when raising children. I could see them as being fine parents because they would consciously avoid the mistakes their parents made with them. Yes, I see an old Kate and Lindsey, silver haired and happy, their children and grandchildren around them. “Grow old along with me; The best is yet to be.” And the best for Lindsey, in my humble opinion, is the lovely Kate Lockley.
